Building sustainable SMART labs
Give young people hands-on physical STEM experiences through LegoLabs, where they build SMART Lego labs, data centres and mimic real-world building management systems using the micro:bit programmable device. Incredible and sustainable science can only take place if there are spaces of equal excellence to support scientists.
-
Learn practical problem solving and explore world-class research facilities
-
Explore careers in construction, technology and sustainability inclduding architects, electrical engineers, project managers and landscapers
-
Build sensory networks with the micro:bit utilising AI
-
Collaboratively build physical future sustainable labs with Lego
-
Supporting young people in schools and community groups

Young people explore careers in construction, including facilities, architecture, security, landscaping, project management, electrical engineering, and CAD specialists. In teams, they individually take on these roles as they collaborate to build future labs. They hear directly from role models across these roles to help them realise the variety of roles that support incredible science.
In these roles, they make decisions and communicate with a specific focus, helping their team ensure their lab meets a variety of important requirements. Through this approach, they build teamwork and communication skills.
Careers and teamwork

Building with Lego builds confidence. They plan, design and implement in iterations, developing conversation, exploring refinements and each young person in the team have agency is being part of something big - their lab. They learn about sustainable builds and materials to help develop a space for scientists that is not only practical, but inspires creativity.
They develop more confidence in their specific role in the team, helping them to understand decision-making, priorities and how their actions fit into the wider sustainability of their lab design and model.
Building confidence

Within their designed model, young people deploy micro:bit devices with sensors and actuators to help create sustainable automatiions such as reactive lighting and motrised windows and doors. They do this using using motion, heat, image, light and moisture sensors which they are able to train using machine learning approaches.
To enable these automations, children code micro:bits and use radio to transmit data between devices and help build interactive AI dashboards. Through coding these solutions they develop computational thinking approaches including algorithmic thinking, decomposition and abstraction.
Developing digital skills

Download activities from our LegoLabs resource library, complete with slides, activity plans and guidance.
For those who cannot get out of the classroom, we have broken the training down into a series of 1 hour online sessions that will be led by an experienced teacher.
All sessions will be recorded so you can refer back to them at your leisure to help retention.

Community events (face-to-face)
Take part in LegoLabs showcases and sustainability-themed STEM days. Great for bringing schools and communities together across a region or multi-academy trust.
